Non-shedding dogs (hypoallergenic) are gaining popularity among animal lovers everywhere. Due to the fact they are compatible companions for allergy sufferers. These hypoallergenic dog breeds don’t cause the usual sneezing and itchy eyes that the other dog breeds are known to cause in people allergic to pet dander. According to the American Kennel Club, there are no 100% hypoallergenic dog breeds. However, the few dogs classified as being hypoallergenic have shown to decrease the allergy symptoms in people with pet dander sensitivities. The reason behind the decreased sensitivity to pet dander is due to the non-shedding dogs’ lack of a full undercoat.
Portuguese Water Dog: Non-Shedding Dogs
Non-Shedding Dogs: The popularity of the Portuguese Water Dog has increased by 44% in the last ten years due to its lack of shedding (American Kennel Club). Because they are single-coated, non-shedding canines, Portuguese Water Dogs are generally a good breed for persons with pet dander sensitivities. While the Portuguese Water Dog is an excellent choice for persons with moderate pet allergies, it is not suggested for people with asthma because it can still trigger an allergic reaction (Portuguese Water Dog Club of America). These dogs may not be the best pets for small children because they like to play rough.
Chinese Crested Dog
Chinese Crested dogs are one of the few breeds that don’t shed. Due to its lack of shedding, the popularity of this breed has surged by as much as 28 percent in the last ten years, according to the American Kennel Club. Because of its distinctive appearance, the Chinese Crested dog has only recently gained popularity as a hypoallergenic pet. These dogs have nearly bare skin and tufts of hair on their heads. Despite its unusual appearance, this dog makes an excellent family pet.
Bedlington Terrier: Non-Shedding Dogs
Another dog that has grown in popularity in the last ten years is the Bedlington Terrier. According to the American Kennel Club, the popularity of this breed has surged by 28% in just a decade. Despite the fact that it looks like a lamb, this dog sheds very little. This terrier is a wonderful choice for allergy patients as a companion.
